You have received two quotes for a penile implant in Turkey, but the prices and descriptions differ. Before paying a deposit, make sure you understand exactly what each document entails: what treatment, using which device, carried out by which team and with what follow-up care. The total amount shown does not, on its own, allow you to compare the quality or suitability of the treatment.

This guide offers a method for reviewing the information and questions to ask. The services listed are points to check, not an offer from TebbHelp or any particular clinic. No standard rate can replace a quote tailored to your specific case.

Ensure you’re working from the same medical plan

Start by checking that the quotes are in response to the same request. Is this a first-time implantation or a replacement? Is the same type of device being considered? Is an associated procedure mentioned? If the answers differ, ask the surgeon to explain the medical reason before comparing prices.

The European Association of Urology distinguishes, in particular, between inflatable penile implants and malleable penile implants. It emphasises the importance of patient information prior to implantation. The choice must take into account alternatives, expectations and the individual’s circumstances. [1]

If the medical indication remains unclear, start by looking at situations in which to discuss a prosthesis with a urologist. A commercial quote is no substitute for this consultation. Make a separate note of any medical questions so that they can be answered by the relevant specialist.

Identify the device and those responsible

Ask for the proposal to specify the manufacturer, the intended model and the type of prosthesis. Terms such as ‘premium’ or ‘latest generation’ are not sufficient to identify a device. If the model is still to be confirmed following the consultation, ask for clarification on what remains provisional and how any changes will be communicated.

Also note down the surgeon’s name, the exact hospital where the operation is planned, and the organisation issuing the quote. Who will answer clinical questions? Who bills for the hospital stay? Who is responsible for coordinating the stay? One person may act as the central point of contact, but ask which organisation is responsible for each service. Keep a single, dated document rather than several messages containing conflicting information.

Ask for a detailed breakdown of what is included and excluded

For each item, ask for a written response: included, charged separately or still to be confirmed. Your list may include:

- consultations and tests requested by the medical team; - medical equipment, surgical fees and anaesthesia; - hospitalisation, including the expected length of stay; - medication, dressings and follow-up consultations; - interpreting services, transfers and accommodation, if offered; - costs for an accompanying person and any extension of stay.

Ask for the total in a specific currency, the applicable taxes and charges, the payment schedule and the document’s validity period. Any missing item must be clarified; its absence does not automatically mean that the service is included or excluded.

To make things easier, annotate both quotations with the same headings. Separate the confirmed amounts from the expenses that are still unknown. You will then be able to request a revised version from each provider, without turning an estimate into a fixed price.

Plan for follow-up care after your return

The CDC recommends clarifying which services are included in the price, as follow-up care may incur additional costs. They also advise making arrangements for the management of complications before the trip. [2]

Ask for details of the number and location of scheduled check-ups, any associated costs, the professional responsible and how to contact them. For an inflatable penile implant, ask who will provide training on how to use it and how any difficulties will be assessed after your return.

Also ensure you receive a copy of the surgical report and information about the device. To organise your documents and communications, refer to the questions to prepare before seeking treatment abroad.

Check directly with your insurer to find out what is covered for planned treatment abroad and any follow-up care. Do not assume you will be reimbursed. If you suspect a complication, seek medical care without waiting for a response from customer services. [2]

Read the cover details and costs for re-operation separately

A prosthesis may suffer a mechanical failure; infection is also one of the possible complications described by the EAU. [1] This justifies asking about the consequences of any potential reoperation as early as when the quote is being prepared, without assuming that it will be necessary in your case.

If cover is offered, ask for the policy wording, the organisation providing it, the terms and conditions, and the exclusions. Does it cover only the device, or other costs as well? What about the surgeon, anaesthesia, hospitalisation and any further travel? The answers must be found in the documents relating to the quote you have received.

Also ask for clarification on the procedure for reporting a problem and obtaining an assessment. A phrase such as ‘lifetime follow-up’ warrants details regarding the consultations involved, where they take place and how they are billed. Do not calculate a total long-term cost based on a vague promise.

Clarify the terms and conditions before paying

Ask what happens if the assessment leads to the procedure being postponed or cancelled, if the treatment plan changes, or if the dates are rescheduled. Which amounts would be retained or refunded, by whom, and under what conditions? These answers depend on the relevant documents and rules; this article does not imply any automatic right to cancellation or a refund.

The NHS advises patients to be wary of pressure to make a quick decision or a lack of explanation regarding follow-up care. It also recommends taking into account exchange rate fluctuations, an extended stay and any additional travel. [3]

Keep a copy of the final quote and the terms and conditions you have received. If any important information is missing, ask for it before committing. You can seek a second medical opinion to help inform your decision.
